Holy Thursday – “How Did They Do That, Dad?”

One Holy Thursday I have never forgotten took place almost 20 years ago.  Before the 8:00  Celebration of the Lord’s Supper, we were joined by two families, including young children (lots of little finger prints left on dining room windows!!)  for a Seder Supper.  That year three events converged:  Holy Thursday, Passover and a Full Moon.  The Eucharist was nearly concluded, the chapel darkened to prepare for extended adoration for those who were staying – and just then, the moon came up over the hill and the Cross which the chapel overlooks.  Adults and children alike were moon struck!  And then, in the quiet, a child’s voice was heard to say:  “How did they do that, Dad?”

This year I return to that question filled with awe, wonder, delight and gratefulness.  I do so especially after continuing to hear now countless stories, from around the world now united by a pandemic, of the many, many acts of creative and generous goodness being done by so many simply because they cared for someone else in need.

Years from now, we will still be asking:  “How did they do that?”

  1. Glenn thank you for this post. The altar is beautiful. I love a child's perspective on almost anything. Their innocence, acceptance and awe and wonder of the world around us is to be treasured. Even better if we can enter into their world and see through their eyes.
