ASCENSION – During COVID
The Ascension is not an isolated episode…it is part of the Paschal mystery. But in light of the Covid mystery, it is becoming a very long Ascension time…being left alone in isolation waiting…..waiting……for a vaccine…..for a cure….for a miracle…….for the Spirit of Pentecost to come to the rescue??
When in trouble we all learn quickly how to pray on our own. The two of us did not wait for Pentecost on the calendar for the Coming of the Spirit ….. we invited Her early. It somehow seemed odd to have ‘Jesus’ sacramentally locked up in vacant churches
while we hungered at home.
So, we began celebrating Eucharist together in our humble home, taking ‘bread into our hands,’ trusting that when Jesus said : “wherever two or more of you gather in my name, I am there..” (We are more than two: Sophia is with us.)
A friend questioned : “Do you believe that you have the power to consecrate bread and wine?” I replied: “ No, but the same Spirit that the priest invokes at Mass does! My part is to allow the Spirit to change me! That’s a much bigger task!
”
The closing prayer for today reads: “Ever loving God, You allow those on earth to
celebrate divine mysteries; may living hope draw us onward to where our nature is
united with You, through Jesus, Your Son and our Brother. Amen.”

I believe that the Spirit who hovered over the earth at the time of creation, has also hovered over us since our conception. Yes, there have been special sacred times such as baptism when the Spirit filled us with her presence. But there have been many instances throughout our life when the Spirit has made her presence known, and sometimes we have been graced and attentive enough to realize her coming and her indwelling.
ReplyDeleteWe await the feast of Pentecost in order to remember and celebrate the Spirit's coming as promised by Jesus. And in order to remember and celebrate anew the indwelling of the Spirit of love, of hope, of promise - of Presence in our yesterdays, our todays and our tomorrows.
